Meandering

Gallery › Fall Foliage

A 2021 visit to our daughter and her photographer husband in later October provided an opportunity to witness an abundantly colorful Appalachian fall amid the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We were able to spend several days touring the countryside searching for iconic scenes by driving some of the less frequented roads that led up into the mountains. One such road not only took us past a beautiful waterfall, but kept climbing high into the mountainous terrain, the road lined by the changing forest with a multitude of trees. We had little idea of where we were going or where we might end up, but the meandering road drew us onward and upward, twisting, turning, climbing upward more and more until it crested out, and then ambling downward into North Carolina. The day was misty with light rain falling at times. The mist subdued the vibrant colors a little and provided a subtle mystique to the entire scene. This particular photo was taken on the Carolina side of the drive, looking back from whence we had come. Each turn of the meandering road invited us to continue, wondering what new vista would unfold in this exquisite Appalachian forest.
