The mountains seen in this photo are variously known as the “Sneffels Range,” or “Dallas Divide,” which is also the name of the lower elevation pass that is crossed when driving from Ridgway to Telluride.
These summits are located in the Uncompahgre National Forest and more than half the range is included in the small but highly scenic Mt. Sneffels Wilderness. Much of the land in the foreground is privately owned. The “Dallas” name is for the 11th vice -president of the United States, George M. Dallas.
A fall scene with some new snow on the peaks is a photo coveted by many a Colorado and even out of state photographer. The transition from summer to fall brings out a beautiful array colors, from the distant blues of the sky and peaks, to green fields and trees, to the reds, golds and browns of autumn. Visiting this area in the fall is simply a nearly unrivalled delight for the eyes.
The photo shown here was taken in the fall of 2019 on a road trip to collect photos from various Colorado locations of the transitioning aspens. What attracted us to this scene, taken from along CO 62, was the nice rail fence, the recently cut fields, the color transition and of course, the distant peaks.
