With all the magnificent beauty to be found in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and the extraordinary formations of the “red-rock” country in Utah and Arizona, we don’t often get away to other locations farther away, but the move of one of our children to Tennessee prompted a visit to another part of the country we had not seen in many years.
Living in Jonesburough, our daughter, her husband and granddaughter treated us to a memorable visit with hikes along streams to tumbling waterfalls and lush, green forests. Their new residence lies just out of the historic town which boasts to be the oldest in Tennessee. Located at the western foot of the Appalachian Mountains, this is verdant and productive country. During the westward expansion of the earlier days of our country, pioneering souls carved out towns and farms from the dense forests. Just out of the town, the landscape today is that of rolling hills, interspersed with homes, fields for grazing cattle or hay production and remnants of the forests that follow the streams and rivers.
We caught this photo of a famers field one evening just a short walk across the street from our daughter’s home. The low, evening sun casting it’s final light of the day on the neatly wound, first cut of bales of hay, the clear sky, the distant trees and the verdant green combined to make a nostalgic scene that reminds us of our privilege to live in such a magnificent country.
